Bánh Mì

Bánh Mì

Vietnam

History

The bánh mì is a delicious product of French colonialism in Vietnam: the airy baguette is French, but the fillings are wholly Vietnamese — pate beside pickled daikon and carrot, cilantro, chili and savory pork. It took its modern form in 1950s Saigon and spread worldwide with the Vietnamese diaspora.

Ingredients

  • Baguette
  • Grilled pork (or pate + cold cuts)
  • Pickled daikon and carrot
  • Cucumber
  • Cilantro
  • Jalapeno
  • Mayonnaise
  • Maggi or soy seasoning

How to Make

  1. 1Split the baguette and lightly toast.
  2. 2Spread mayonnaise and/or pate.
  3. 3Layer the pork or cold cuts.
  4. 4Pile on pickled daikon and carrot, cucumber, cilantro and jalapeno.
  5. 5Add a dash of Maggi seasoning, close and enjoy.
