Bocadillo de Jamón

Bocadillo de Jamón

Spain

History

The bocadillo de jamón is the most eaten sandwich in Spain, sold from bars, cafeterías and roadside stops across the country from sunrise to midnight. Its genius lies in its simplicity: a fresh crusty barra de pan split and filled with slices of jamón serrano or, in its most prized form, jamón ibérico de bellota. No butter, no sauce — just great ham and great bread. The bocadillo is the backbone of Spanish food culture, eaten for breakfast, as a mid-morning almuerzo, or as a late-night snack, and it has been a daily ritual for generations of Spaniards.

Ingredients

  • Barra de pan (Spanish crusty baguette)
  • Jamón serrano or jamón ibérico
  • Olive oil (optional, drizzled inside)
  • Tomato (optional, rubbed inside)

How to Make

  1. 1Source the best jamón you can — serrano at minimum, ibérico if possible.
  2. 2Split a fresh barra de pan lengthwise without fully separating.
  3. 3Optional: rub the inside of the bread with a cut tomato and drizzle with olive oil.
  4. 4Layer generous slices of jamón inside the roll.
  5. 5Close, press lightly and eat immediately — freshness is everything.
