Breakfast Sandwich

United States

History

The American breakfast sandwich crystallized in the mid-20th century as diners and lunch counters began assembling eggs, cheese and breakfast meats between bread for on-the-go workers. The English muffin version was popularized nationally by McDonald's Egg McMuffin, introduced in 1972 by franchisee Herb Peterson — though New York deli and bodega versions on hard rolls predate it. Today it is arguably the most-eaten sandwich in America.

Ingredients

  • English muffin (or Kaiser roll or bagel)
  • Large egg
  • American or cheddar cheese slice
  • Back bacon rasher or breakfast sausage patty
  • Butter
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Hot sauce (optional)

How to Make

  1. 1Split and toast the English muffin until golden.
  2. 2Melt butter in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Crack in the egg, season with salt and pepper, and cook sunny-side up or over-easy to your liking.
  3. 3In the same pan, cook the bacon or sausage patty until cooked through.
  4. 4Lay the cheese on the bottom muffin half. Top with the hot meat, then the egg.
  5. 5Add hot sauce if desired. Close with the top half and press gently.
  6. 6Serve immediately.
