Cubano
Cuba / Florida
History
The Cuban sandwich was born not in Cuba but in the cigar factories of Tampa and Key West, where Cuban, Spanish and Italian workers needed a portable lunch. Roast pork, ham, Swiss, pickles and mustard pressed on Cuban bread — Tampa famously adds Genoa salami, a nod to its Italian community.
Ingredients
- Cuban bread (or a soft baguette)
- Roast pork
- Sliced ham
- Swiss cheese
- Dill pickles
- Yellow mustard
- Butter
How to Make
- 1Split the bread and spread mustard inside.
- 2Layer ham, roast pork, Swiss and pickles.
- 3Butter the outside of the bread.
- 4Press in a panini press or weighted skillet until flat, crisp and the cheese melts.
- 5Cut on the diagonal and serve.
