History

The Cuban sandwich was born not in Cuba but in the cigar factories of Tampa and Key West, where Cuban, Spanish and Italian workers needed a portable lunch. Roast pork, ham, Swiss, pickles and mustard pressed on Cuban bread — Tampa famously adds Genoa salami, a nod to its Italian community.

Ingredients

  • Cuban bread (or a soft baguette)
  • Roast pork
  • Sliced ham
  • Swiss cheese
  • Dill pickles
  • Yellow mustard
  • Butter

How to Make

  1. 1Split the bread and spread mustard inside.
  2. 2Layer ham, roast pork, Swiss and pickles.
  3. 3Butter the outside of the bread.
  4. 4Press in a panini press or weighted skillet until flat, crisp and the cheese melts.
  5. 5Cut on the diagonal and serve.
