Dagwood

History

The Dagwood takes its name from Dagwood Bumstead, the hapless husband in Chic Young's comic strip 'Blondie,' which debuted in 1930. In the strip, Dagwood famously raided the refrigerator late at night to construct impossibly tall sandwiches from whatever he could find. The 'Dagwood' became American shorthand for any extravagantly overstuffed sandwich, and the comic-strip image of a teetering tower of cold cuts, cheese, lettuce and condiments became a beloved cultural icon of American excess and appetite.

Ingredients

• White or wheat sandwich bread (3 slices)
• Roast turkey, sliced
• Honey ham, sliced
• Roast beef, sliced
• American cheese
• Swiss cheese
• Leaf lettuce
• Tomato, sliced
• Pickles
• Red onion, sliced
• Mayonnaise
• Yellow mustard
• Salt and black pepper

How to Make

1. 1Toast all three slices of bread lightly.
2. 2Spread mayo on the bottom slice and mustard on the middle slice.
3. 3Layer roast beef, lettuce and tomato on the bottom slice; top with the middle bread.
4. 4Layer turkey, ham, both cheeses, pickles and red onion on the middle slice.
5. 5Crown with the top slice of bread.
6. 6Pin with a long toothpick or skewer to hold the tower together.
7. 7Slice diagonally and serve immediately — if you can get your mouth around it.
