Fluffernutter

Fluffernutter

New England, USA

History

The fluffernutter is a New England institution, born from the invention of Marshmallow Fluff by Archibald Query in Somerville, Massachusetts around 1917. The combination of peanut butter and Fluff on white bread became a lunchbox staple across the northeastern United States, and the name 'fluffernutter' was coined in a 1960 advertising campaign by Durkee-Mower, the makers of Fluff. It remains so beloved in Massachusetts that a bill to make it the official state sandwich has been introduced multiple times in the state legislature.

Ingredients

  • Soft white sandwich bread (2 slices)
  • Creamy peanut butter
  • Marshmallow Fluff (marshmallow cream)

How to Make

  1. 1Lay two slices of soft white bread on a clean surface.
  2. 2Spread a generous layer of creamy peanut butter on one slice, covering edge to edge.
  3. 3Spread an equally generous layer of Marshmallow Fluff on the other slice.
  4. 4Press the two slices together firmly.
  5. 5Cut diagonally and serve. Do not toast — the softness of the bread is essential.
