Grilled Cheese

History
Cooked cheese on bread is ancient, but the modern American grilled cheese took off in the 1920s with cheap sliced bread and processed cheese. It became a Depression-era comfort food and a school-cafeteria icon — pure, simple, perfect.
Ingredients
- White or sourdough bread
- American or sharp cheddar cheese
- Butter
How to Make
- 1Butter the outside of two slices of bread.
- 2Place cheese between them.
- 3Griddle over medium heat until deep golden brown and the cheese is fully melted, flipping once.
