Descended from the Ottoman döner kebab, the Greek gyro (meaning 'turn') shaves meat off a vertical rotisserie into warm pita with tomato, onion and cool tzatziki. It spread across the U.S. through Greek immigrants in the 1960s and '70s.
Ingredients
- Warm pita bread
- Gyro meat (lamb & beef, or chicken)
- Tzatziki sauce
- Tomato
- Red onion
- Lettuce
How to Make
- 1Warm the pita.
- 2Spread with tzatziki.
- 3Add sliced gyro meat, tomato, onion and lettuce.
- 4Wrap tightly and serve.
