Italian Beef

Italian Beef

Chicago, USA

History

A Chicago institution since the 1930s, the Italian beef piles thin-sliced, slow-roasted seasoned beef on a long roll, topped with spicy giardiniera or sweet peppers — and often dunked ('dipped') in the seasoned cooking jus until the bread is soaked through.

Ingredients

  • Long Italian roll
  • Thin-sliced seasoned roast beef
  • Beef jus (Italian herbs)
  • Giardiniera (spicy)
  • Sweet bell peppers

How to Make

  1. 1Slow-roast and thinly slice the seasoned beef; keep it warm in the jus.
  2. 2Pile it onto a long roll.
  3. 3Top with spicy giardiniera or sweet peppers.
  4. 4Optionally dip the whole sandwich in the jus before serving.
