Monte Cristo
France / USA
History
A descendant of the French croque-monsieur, the Monte Cristo was popularized in 1960s America — famously at Disneyland's Blue Bayou — by battering and frying the whole ham-and-cheese sandwich, then dusting it with powdered sugar and serving it with jam. Sweet meets savory in the most decadent way.
