Monte Cristo

Monte Cristo

France / USA

History

A descendant of the French croque-monsieur, the Monte Cristo was popularized in 1960s America — famously at Disneyland's Blue Bayou — by battering and frying the whole ham-and-cheese sandwich, then dusting it with powdered sugar and serving it with jam. Sweet meets savory in the most decadent way.

Ingredients

  • White sandwich bread
  • Sliced ham
  • Sliced turkey
  • Swiss cheese
  • Egg batter
  • Powdered sugar
  • Raspberry or strawberry jam
  • Butter

How to Make

  1. 1Build a ham, turkey and Swiss sandwich.
  2. 2Dip the whole sandwich in beaten egg.
  3. 3Fry in butter until golden on both sides and the cheese melts.
  4. 4Dust generously with powdered sugar.
  5. 5Serve with jam for dipping.
