History

Created in 1906 at Central Grocery in New Orleans by Sicilian immigrant Salvatore Lupo, the muffuletta layers Italian cold cuts and cheese with a tangy marinated olive salad on a round sesame loaf. It's traditionally let to sit so the olive oil soaks through.

Ingredients

  • Round muffuletta (sesame) loaf
  • Olive salad (olives, giardiniera, garlic, oil)
  • Genoa salami
  • Mortadella
  • Capicola
  • Provolone
  • Mozzarella

How to Make

  1. 1Split the round loaf and spread olive salad on both halves.
  2. 2Layer the salami, mortadella, capicola and cheeses.
  3. 3Press, then let it sit so the olive oil soaks in.
  4. 4Cut into wedges.
