History
Created in 1906 at Central Grocery in New Orleans by Sicilian immigrant Salvatore Lupo, the muffuletta layers Italian cold cuts and cheese with a tangy marinated olive salad on a round sesame loaf. It's traditionally let to sit so the olive oil soaks through.
Ingredients
- Round muffuletta (sesame) loaf
- Olive salad (olives, giardiniera, garlic, oil)
- Genoa salami
- Mortadella
- Capicola
- Provolone
- Mozzarella
How to Make
- 1Split the round loaf and spread olive salad on both halves.
- 2Layer the salami, mortadella, capicola and cheeses.
- 3Press, then let it sit so the olive oil soaks in.
- 4Cut into wedges.
