Pepito
Venezuela / Spain
History
The pepito is one of the most popular street sandwiches in Venezuela, where it is sold from street carts and small restaurants called 'pepiterías.' Filled with grilled or shredded beef, chicken, or pork and loaded with toppings, it is Venezuela's answer to the cheesesteak. A parallel version exists in Spain — particularly in Madrid and Valencia — where it typically features veal or pork tenderloin with roasted peppers and aioli. Both versions share a name and a spirit of generosity, piling a crusty roll high with grilled meat and vibrant toppings.
Ingredients
- Pan de pepito or crusty French-style roll
- Grilled or shredded beef (or chicken/pork)
- Sliced white cheese (queso blanco or mozzarella)
- Lettuce

- Avocado or guasacaca sauce
- Mayonnaise

How to Make
- 1Slice the roll lengthwise and lightly toast on a griddle.

- 4Spread mayo, mustard and ketchup on the toasted roll.
- 5Add the cheesy meat to the roll.
- 6Top with lettuce, tomato, avocado slices or guasacaca.
- 7Add pickled jalapeños if desired and serve immediately.
