The char siu (Chinese BBQ pork) bánh mì is one of the most popular variations of Vietnam's beloved street sandwich, blending the French colonial baguette with Chinese-influenced roasted pork. It became a staple of Vietnamese street stalls and sandwich shops both in Vietnam and across the diaspora, prized for its sweet, caramelized pork against the tang of pickled vegetables.
Ingredients
- Vietnamese baguette
- Char siu (Chinese BBQ pork), thinly sliced
- Liver pâté
- Pickled daikon and carrot
- Sliced cucumber
- Fresh cilantro
- Sliced jalapeño
- Mayonnaise
- Maggi seasoning sauce
How to Make
- 1Prepare char siu by marinating pork in hoisin, soy, honey and five-spice, then roasting until caramelized.
- 2Pickle julienned daikon and carrot in rice vinegar, sugar and salt for at least 30 minutes.
- 3Split the baguette and lightly toast the cut sides.
- 4Spread a thin layer of liver pâté and mayonnaise on the bread.
- 5Layer in the char siu pork, pickled vegetables, cucumber, cilantro and jalapeño.
- 6Drizzle with Maggi seasoning sauce and serve immediately.
