Pork Roll Sandwich
New Jersey, USA
History
Pork roll — also called Taylor Ham in North Jersey — was created by John Taylor of Trenton, New Jersey in 1856 and has been a regional staple ever since. The pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich on a hard roll is a cornerstone of New Jersey diner and deli culture, eaten by generations of Garden State residents as a fast, satisfying breakfast. The north vs. south debate over whether to call it 'pork roll' or 'Taylor Ham' is one of New Jersey's most passionate regional rivalries.
