History

The loose-meat sandwich traces to Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930s, where a cook named Joe is often credited with adding tomato sauce to seasoned ground beef. Cheap, fast and gloriously messy, it became an American school-cafeteria and weeknight icon.

  • Soft hamburger bun
  • Ground beef
  • Onion & green pepper
  • Tomato sauce & ketchup
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Brown sugar & mustard

How to Make

  1. 1Brown ground beef with diced onion and green pepper.
  2. 2Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire, a little brown sugar and mustard.
  3. 3Simmer until thick and saucy.
  4. 4Spoon generously onto a soft bun.
  5. 5Serve immediately, with napkins.
