Tramezzino
Turin, Italy
History
The tramezzino was invented in 1925 at the Caffè Mulassano in Turin, where owner Carol Vaccarino and his wife Con created the first crustless, triangular sandwich to serve with afternoon drinks. The name — meaning 'something in between' — was coined by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio as an Italian alternative to the English word 'sandwich.' Today it is a staple of bars and cafés across Italy, eaten standing up at the counter with a glass of wine or spritz.
Ingredients
- Crustless soft white sandwich bread (pan carré)
- Tuna in olive oil
- Mayonnaise
- Hard-boiled egg, sliced
- Pickled vegetables (optional)
- Black olives
How to Make
- 1Trim crusts from soft white sandwich bread.
- 2Mix tuna with mayonnaise until creamy.
- 3Spread tuna mixture evenly on one slice of bread.
- 4Layer sliced hard-boiled egg and olives on top.
- 5Top with a second slice of bread and press gently.
- 6Cut diagonally into two triangles.
- 7Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled.
