History
Langer's Delicatessen opened in 1947 across from MacArthur Park, founded by Al Langer and run by the family ever since — today by his son Norm. Its signature No. 19 (pastrami, Swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing on double-baked rye) turned a neighborhood deli into a destination: the Los Angeles Times' Jonathan Gold championed its pastrami for years as the best in the country, and Nora Ephron famously argued it bettered New York's. When the surrounding neighborhood declined and the deli's survival looked shaky, the opening of the Metro Red Line stop at its front door helped keep the doors open. More than 75 years on, Langer's still cures, steams and hand-cuts its pastrami daily — a rare survivor of LA's old deli era.
