History

The hoagie is Philadelphia's official sandwich, said to have been named for Italian workers at the WWI-era Hog Island shipyard who packed meat-and-cheese rolls for lunch. Cold cured meats, sharp provolone and a splash of oil and vinegar define the classic Italian version.

Ingredients

  • Long Italian hoagie roll
  • Genoa salami
  • Capicola
  • Mortadella
  • Provolone cheese
  • Lettuce, tomato & onion
  • Oil, vinegar & oregano

How to Make

  1. 1Split a long Italian roll lengthwise.
  2. 2Layer salami, capicola and mortadella with provolone.
  3. 3Add shredded lettuce, sliced tomato and onion.
  4. 4Drizzle with olive oil and red wine vinegar, then season with oregano, salt and pepper.
  5. 5Close, press lightly and cut in half.
