Meatball Sub

Meatball Sub

United States (Italian-American)

History

The meatball sub is an Italian-American invention — Southern Italian immigrants in the early 1900s plated meatballs and gravy separately, but in America the two were tucked into a roll for a cheap, hearty lunch. It became a deli and pizzeria staple up and down the East Coast.

Ingredients

  • Italian hero roll
  • Beef-and-pork meatballs
  • Marinara sauce
  • Provolone cheese
  • Grated Parmesan
  • Fresh basil

How to Make

  1. 1Roll seasoned beef-and-pork meatballs and brown them, then simmer in marinara until cooked through.
  2. 2Split a hero roll and lightly toast it.
  3. 3Spoon in meatballs with plenty of sauce.
  4. 4Lay provolone over the top and broil until melted and bubbling.
  5. 5Finish with grated Parmesan and torn basil.
