History

Primanti Bros. was started in 1933 by Joe Primanti as a sandwich cart in Pittsburgh's Strip District, serving the truckers and produce workers who came through overnight. Joined by his brothers, Joe opened a storefront, and the now-iconic move — piling the fries and slaw right onto the sandwich so drivers could eat on the go — became the signature. The hand-held meal caught on across the city, and the family-run chain has since grown well beyond Pittsburgh while the original 18th Street shop still serves them around the clock.
